Napa hides a hard truth, a county ordinance means most of its wineries cannot legally host a wedding at all.
The result is that the historic, grandfathered estates are the real prize, and they happen to be the most beautiful, all stone, redwood and nineteenth century architecture.
Book early, marry outside the autumn crush, and you have history that hosts as well as it photographs.
Because of Napa's Winery Definition Ordinance, only a small number of historic wineries hold the legacy permits to host weddings. That scarcity is exactly why the landmark estates matter. Charles Krug, founded in 1861 and the valley's oldest winery, Beringer, its oldest continuously operating one, and V. Sattui, a grand stone winery from 1885, are the names to know. All sit in or near St Helena, all carry real history, and all can legally host a wedding, which many famous Napa names cannot.

Charles Krug Winery
The oldest wineryNapa Valley's oldest winery, established in 1861, with a beautifully restored 1881 Carriage House at its heart. The building gives you a ballroom, a dining room and an outdoor patio under heritage trees, a rare combination of indoor grandeur and open air. As one of the few estates permitted to host weddings, and arguably the most storied, it is our first call for a Napa wedding that wants the weight of real history behind it.
Beringer Vineyards
The Rhine HouseNapa's oldest continuously operating winery, whose Rhine House is one of the valley's true architectural treasures, a richly detailed nineteenth century mansion. Couples can choose between dramatically different moods, from a ceremony among towering redwoods to a dinner in the historic wine caves. It is the choice when you want the venue itself to be a landmark, with a sense of occasion built into every space.
V. Sattui Winery
Stone and gardensFounded in 1885, a grand vine clad stone winery in the classic manner of early California, with sun drenched courtyards, a garden of roses, olive trees and a fountain, and a candlelit barrel room for dinner. It carries larger celebrations than the others, up to around two hundred and fifty guests, and pairs estate wines with a serious culinary programme. The choice for a historic Napa wedding on a generous scale.
A clarifying note. Several of Napa's most photographed buildings, including the Tuscan style castle Castello di Amorosa and the chateau at Domaine Carneros, are stunning but cannot host weddings under their permits. We have left them off because a venue is only useful to you if it can lawfully marry you. Capacities and policies change, so confirm the current terms with each estate.
Premium, and best treated as a range.
Napa is one of the most expensive wedding regions in the United States, and the scarcity of legal venues only firms up prices. As an indicative November 2025 guide, a wedding for a hundred to a hundred and fifty guests at a historic estate commonly lands somewhere between seventy five thousand and two hundred thousand dollars all in, with venue fee, catering, wine and production the largest lines. Smaller, weekday or off season weddings can be planned for meaningfully less.
Two things drive the number. Site fees at the landmark wineries are high and demand is concentrated, so the best dates go far in advance. And many estates require you to use approved caterers and to serve their wine, both reasonable, but worth pricing early. These are guide figures only. Confirm every number with the venue.
The legal and seasonal truth.
The defining fact about marrying in Napa is the Winery Definition Ordinance, in place since the late 1980s, which bars wineries from hosting weddings except those whose use predated the rule. That is why only a handful of historic estates can legally host you, and why this short list matters more than a long one would. A California marriage licence itself is simple to obtain in advance, and a civil officiant or your own celebrant can perform the ceremony, so the legal side for couples is easy. It is the venue permitting that narrows the field.
On season, late spring and early autumn are loveliest. May, June, September and October give warm days and golden light, though September and October coincide with harvest, when the valley is at its busiest and most expensive and some wineries restrict events. Midsummer can be genuinely hot inland, and winter is quiet and green with the risk of rain. The harvest crush is the season that flatters the vines but complicates the wedding, so weigh it carefully.
Logistics are easy by destination standards. San Francisco and Oakland airports are roughly an hour and a half away, the valley is compact, and accommodation runs from historic inns to full resorts, so guest travel is rarely the obstacle.

Why can so few Napa wineries host weddings?
